Over 200 AIM protestors congregate at the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre site to provide support to Oglala traditionalists who charge that the tribal leader, Richard Wilson, and his “goon” squad are corrupt and in collusion with paramilitary federal police. Over 2000 American Indians arrive to support the siege, which lasts for 71 days, against the FBI, the U.S. Marshal Service, and BIA police. The U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division is called in for military attack preparations. The 10-week standoff ends with over 185 Native people indicted on federal charges.
